Our Story
One day
in 2015,
I was standing atop a proposed wind farm site in Indonesia. It was warm and sunny, the grassy hilltops rippling in a strong breeze – the kind of scene any Old Master would have been proud of. Of all the dozens of sites I’d visited over the years, this one had it all.
From the hilltop you could see for miles, ensuring excellent wind exposure. The ridgelines were rolling and just the right amount of rugged, encouraging the wind to race over them.
As I looked along the primary ridge, the prevailing wind hit one cheek and I made a mental note of how a highly wake-efficient layout could be crafted. In the distance, just touching the foot of the hill, a road and transmission line wound across the surrounding plains.
I was confident that much of what made the site so attractive could be distilled into hard code – but I also knew that a large part came from engineering instincts built up over years of poring over prospective sites. I founded Wind Pioneers in 2016 to sit exactly in the intersection of those two things: smart, independent experts, powered by smart, flexible software tools.
It was also clear to me that our engineering base should be in Bangalore – where the sun always shines, the dosas flow continuously and, most importantly, where there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to wind engineers and software developers.
Since 2016, we have grown our team across GIS, data science, and climate research, transforming traditional “hill-running” metrics into innovative wind farm development methods. By connecting our in-house experts directly with clients, we ensure every project has access to the expertise it needs.
A decade on, the results speak for themselves. Our team has gone from strength to strength, and operational wind farms around the world now carry our DNA. From measurements and yield analyses to layouts, our work is reflected in projects delivering value on the ground.
